Florida Motorcycle Insurance — Cheap Coverage for Riders Who Actually Ride
Florida has more registered motorcycles than almost any state, the longest riding season in the country, and unfortunately some of the highest motorcycle fatality rates. A good motorcycle policy in Florida is not the bare minimum — it is bodily injury, uninsured-motorist, medical payments, comprehensive, and accessories coverage built around your specific bike. We write Harleys, sportbikes, ADV, cruisers, scooters, and Vespas through Dairyland, Progressive, Markel, Foremost, Allstate, Geico, and the major specialty carriers.
- Harleys, sportbikes, ADV, cruisers, scooters
- Liability + UM + medical pay built right
- Accessories and custom parts coverage
- Roadside, trip-interruption, and event coverage

Why Florida motorcycle insurance needs more than state minimum
Florida does not require liability insurance for motorcycles at the time of registration (you can self-certify financial responsibility), and that loophole creates an enormous false sense of security. The moment you cause an accident with injuries, you are personally liable for every medical bill and lost-wage claim. With nearly 1 in 5 Florida drivers uninsured and motorcycle injuries running into the hundreds of thousands, riding without real coverage is asset-suicide.
Bodily Injury Liability
Pays the other party’s medical bills, lost wages, and pain-and-suffering when you cause a crash. We recommend $100K/$300K minimum for any rider with assets and $250K/$500K for sportbikes or experienced riders.
Uninsured Motorist (UM)
When a car driver pulls out in front of you and runs, or carries minimum coverage that isn’t enough, UM pays your medical bills, lost wages, and pain-and-suffering. The single most important coverage on a Florida motorcycle policy.
Medical Payments
Pays your medical bills regardless of fault, with no deductible. Florida riders are not eligible for PIP on a motorcycle, so MedPay (typically $5K–$25K) is the only no-fault medical coverage available.
Coverage details that matter
Comprehensive & Collision
Comp covers theft, vandalism, hail, hurricane, and falling objects. Collision covers crashes. Required on financed bikes; strongly recommended on any bike you cannot replace in cash.
Accessories & Custom Parts
Pipes, fairings, paint, audio systems, saddlebags, custom seats — standard policies often cap “accessories” at $1,000–$3,000. If you have a built bike, we schedule custom parts up front so you get paid for what you actually own.
Roadside + Trip Interruption
For around $1–$3 a month: 24/7 motorcycle-specific towing (regular tow trucks can damage bikes) plus reimbursement for hotels, meals, and rental vehicles when you break down on a trip.
Sportbike, cruiser, ADV — your insurance changes
Different bikes price very differently. Sportbikes typically run 30–60% higher premiums than cruisers because of crash frequency and theft rates. ADV bikes price somewhere in between. Scooters under 50cc often do not need a motorcycle endorsement and price closer to a moped policy. We let you compare insurance cost before you buy the bike so it factors into your decision.
- Sportbikes (R1, GSX-R, ZX-10, Panigale) → higher rates, strict storage requirements
- Cruisers (Harley, Indian, Triumph Bonneville) → moderate rates, generous accessory coverage
- ADV (BMW GS, Africa Twin, KTM Adventure) → moderate rates, off-road usage varies by carrier
- Scooters & mopeds → cheapest rates, sometimes covered under home policies
Storage, anti-theft, and how to lower your premium
Florida’s motorcycle theft rate is among the highest in the U.S. (Miami-Dade and Broward in particular). Garaged bikes pay less than uncovered ones. Bikes with factory or aftermarket anti-theft, hardened disc locks, and GPS trackers (Monimoto, Scorpio, BikeTrac) qualify for discounts with most carriers. Taking a Florida-approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course usually saves 5–10% across the board.
- Garaged vs. street-parked — sometimes 20%+ difference
- MSF Basic RiderCourse → 5–10% off most carriers, every 3 years
- GPS theft tracker → discount on most carriers
- Multi-bike, multi-policy bundle savings → 5–15% additional
Frequently asked questions
Is motorcycle insurance required in Florida?
Technically no — Florida lets motorcycle owners self-certify financial responsibility instead of carrying liability. But this is a trap. If you cause a crash with injuries and cannot prove $10K/$20K bodily injury and $10K property damage on demand, your license is suspended and you are personally responsible for every dollar of damages. Real liability coverage is the only sane choice.
How much does motorcycle insurance cost in Florida?
Most riders pay between $200 and $700 per year for solid liability + UM + medpay + comprehensive coverage on a stock cruiser or naked bike. Sportbike riders, riders under 25, and high-value custom builds can run $1,000–$2,500. We shop 15+ specialty carriers to find your sweet spot.
Does my auto insurance cover my motorcycle?
No. Auto and motorcycle are separate policies entirely. Some auto carriers offer a multi-policy discount when you write both with them, but the bike needs its own dedicated motorcycle policy.
Do I need to cover my passenger?
Yes — and your liability already does, as long as you have bodily injury coverage. Some policies also offer a “guest passenger liability” endorsement with higher limits specifically for your passenger. We can add it on most carriers for a few dollars.
Will my bike be covered in winter when I park it?
Yes. Comprehensive coverage protects your bike year-round against theft, vandalism, fire, hail, and other non-collision losses — including when it’s sitting in your garage for months. Some carriers offer a “lay-up” period where collision is dropped at a discount during non-riding months; Florida’s year-round riding season makes this less common here.
I have a custom Harley with $10K in upgrades — how do I cover that?
The “accessories” sublimit on standard motorcycle policies is often only $1K–$3K. For custom builds we schedule the upgrades with itemized values up front — pipes, paint, suspension, audio, saddlebags, custom seats — so the full $10K is actually paid in a total loss. We do this routinely for South Florida Harley owners.
Can I get insurance with a few tickets or a prior accident?
Yes. Several carriers we work with specialize in non-standard motorcycle risk and write riders with speeding tickets, prior at-fault accidents, and SR-22 requirements. Rates are higher than preferred but coverage is available and we map a path back to standard rates as your record clears.
